What a Holistic Life Coach Does

Cristina Maria Fort Garcés, LCAT, ATR-BC, CPC • October 13, 2026

Most people searching for a holistic life coach know they want something deeper, but they do not always know how to name it. They want clarity, alignment, better habits, more intention.

They do not always expect someone to ask what their body has been holding, what grief has gone unnamed, or what version of themselves they have been performing for so long that it started to feel real.

This gap matters. It is often the crux of the matter.

Holistic life coaching does not just work with goals, mindset, or habits. It works with the nervous system, the emotional life, the spiritual life, the old survival strategies, and the quieter truths that have been asking for attention long before you had words for them.

If you are trying to figure out whether you need a holistic life coach, therapy, or something else entirely, this will help you sort it out. I am Cristina Maria Fort Garcés, a somatic therapist and holistic life coach supporting deep-feeling humans, healers, and soul-seekers who are ready to stop managing their lives from the outside and start inhabiting them from within.

My work sits at the intersection of trauma-informed somatic therapy, energy coaching, and soul-level witnessing. If you want to understand the containers I work in, you can explore somatic psychotherapy and energy coaching, two different entry points into related work.

What is holistic life coaching?

Holistic is one of those words that gets used so often it can start to mean almost nothing. So let us make it concrete again.

Holistic life coaching means working with the whole person, not just one slice of experience. Body, mind, emotions, spirit, relationships, environment, purpose. They are all part of the conversation.

That matters because when something is stuck, the answer does not always live in better thinking. It may live in the nervous system. In grief. In exhaustion. In a value you have been compromising. Or a spiritual practice you've been hiding or ashamed of.

What does a holistic life coach do?

A holistic life coach asks different questions. Not just what do you want, but what happens in your body when you imagine having it. Not just what is blocking you, but what your system may be protecting you from. Not just where are you going, but who you have learned to be in order to survive, belong, or stay loved.

In my work, the body is not a side note to the mind. It is a source of information. That is part of what makes somatic energy coaching different from coaching that stays mostly in thought, planning, or behavior change. When the body is included, the work gets closer to the layer where the pattern is living.

A session might hold a recurring pattern you understand intellectually but keep repeating anyway. A decision you cannot make, even with all the facts. Grief you have not wanted to name. A creative impulse you keep suppressing. A life that looks right from the outside and feels wrong from the inside.

Holistic coaching vs. traditional coaching

Traditional life coaching can be useful when you know what you want and need strategy, structure, or accountability. It often works well for goals, habits, and mindset shifts.

Its limits show up when the real obstacle lives below the level of conscious planning. You can build a beautiful strategy for a life your nervous system still experiences as unsafe. You can set the goal, map the timeline, and still find yourself frozen, avoidant, or exhausted.

Holistic life coaching works underneath that layer. It pays attention to what resistance is protecting. It listens to the body before overriding it. It makes room for grief, fear, intuition, identity change, and spiritual hunger.

What makes my approach different is that I am trained to work with these dimensions clinically and somatically, not just intuitively. I bring trauma-informed awareness, somatic attunement, and spiritual literacy into the same room. That combination is rare in coaching spaces, and it changes what the work can reach.

Holistic coach vs. therapist

When therapy fits

Therapy is the right container when there is active trauma that needs clinical processing, when mental health symptoms require licensed support, when someone is in crisis, or when safety is the priority. Therapy is regulated for a reason. Scope of practice matters. Training matters. Accountability matters.

Therapy is also the right fit when you need diagnosis, documentation, insurance billing, or formal assessment. As a somatic therapist, I offer therapy as one of my containers. I do not blur the line when someone needs clinical care.

When coaching fits

Holistic coaching is often the right container when you are not in a clinical crisis but you are in a real threshold. Career change. Relationship change. Identity change. Spiritual change. Creative emergence. The kind of season where your old way of living no longer fits, but you are not broken. You are becoming.

It can also be the more precise fit for people who are highly functional and deeply unfulfilled. From the outside, life looks intact. Inside, something is tired, cramped, or quietly dying. In those moments, alignment matters more than symptom reduction.

My trauma-informed background means that even in a coaching container, I bring awareness that many coaches do not have. I can tell when someone needs therapy, and I can also tell when what is needed is a spacious container for change.

Signs you may be ready

Burnout has become a spiritual crisis

Some burnout is about overwork. Some burnout is about living too far from yourself.

You take the vacation. You sleep more. You cut back where you can. The exhaustion stays. Not just in your schedule, but deeper. In your meaning. In your relationship to your own life.

That is often a sign the issue is not only workload. It may be misalignment. A life organized around performance instead of truth. A body that has been sending signals for years through fatigue, numbness, resentment, and disconnection.

You're high-functioning and deeply unfulfilled

This is one of the hardest places to get support for because nothing looks dramatically wrong. You are functioning. You are meeting expectations. You may even be doing well by visible standards. And still, something feels off.

Maybe your life looks good from the outside and flat from the inside. Maybe you keep thinking, I should be grateful, so why does this feel so wrong? Maybe you have become excellent at being the version of yourself other people reward, while the truer version keeps waiting in the wings.

That threshold often needs support that can hold complexity without pathologizing it.

You don't need another method

A lot of people who end up here have already tried plenty. Goal setting. Habit tracking. Morning routines. Vision boards. Therapy that helped, but did not quite touch the deepest layer. They do not need another shiny method dropped on top of a life that already feels over-managed.

They need a way back into contact with themselves.

That is what holistic life coaching can be when it is done with depth. Not another optimization system. Not a prettier form of self-improvement. A way of remembering the self beneath the performance, the survival strategies, and the noise.

If you are looking for energy coaching, book a consultation today. You don't have to keep managing a life that was never quite yours.
