Virgo: A Guide to Discernment and the New Moon in Virgo

Beyond but HERE: The Virgo Essay

On distillation, the plant kingdom, and taking yourself seriously

It's Virgo season, ruler of plants. The Latin root of virgo isn't just about chastity. It also comes from virga: a young shoot, a sprout.

Virgo isn't sexless purity. It's about distillation: your sharpest, most essential self, with everything extra cut away.

Leo just spent a month asking us to risk being seen, to turn the interior to the exterior. Virgo shows up right after and asks us to go further: of everything we put out there, which parts are really ours?

That question found me this week, and shadow Virgo answered it first: attack masqueraded as discernment.

About 3 years ago I started rebranding my practice. It worked. I'm full. I'm working with the people I called in. That's the work that finally landed, fully realized, this past Leo season. Arriving here, very seen in a new way. I underestimated what the aftermath of getting this big would feel like.

We just came through the eclipse portal late August, which sped everything up and forced us to contend with the bigness of Leo.

Expansion always drags a contraction in behind it. Mine sounded like: am I the person I'm now telling people I am? Can I give what I'm promising? Will people find their mystical magic with me?

Hello, my old insecure friend. I haven't missed you, but I will honor you.

So this week, one morning, I did not open my computer. I postponed work-work, because the real work was holding myself.

I did the dishes instead, and let myself feel the water on my hands instead of rushing through it, because devotion to the mundane thing in front of you is Virgo magic too.

Spirituality isn't a show I have to put on. It's in the dishes. It's in the tea, made slow.

Then I took the tea outside and sat on my rock porch, right in the middle of the plant kingdom, and let myself be inside the contraction.

A statement came through, clear, like the plants said it themselves: "I take myself seriously."

Bam, a mantra, seemingly outta nowhere. Man, I love nature. It's powerful.

So, I said it out loud because that was the directive in that moment. I needed to hear the words vibrate in my body. Something in me settled down.

Because when we're spiraling toward another course, another certification, another book, we are not taking ourselves seriously. We're just feeding the same story that says we're not enough yet.

I have eighteen years of training behind me. Years-long certifications, fellowships, not weekend courses.

I don't need to enroll in anything else. I need to trust the multitude of experiences and years I have behind me.

My insecure young little one showed up right on schedule. I let them sit with me on the porch. I did not hand them the wheel.

That's the actual work of this season. Not becoming more disciplined, more elevated, some upgraded version of myself. Just sorting through what Leo built and asking, plainly, what's still true.

Where Virgo Begins

Zoom out and there's a longer arc underneath the last two seasons. Aries sparks. Taurus grounds that spark into a body. Gemini disperses it outward to gather information. Cancer turns all of that in and builds an emotional self worth having. Then Leo asks that self to walk out the door and risk being seen in public, which is the part I just told you I did two years ago. Virgo is what happens next. Not building anything new. Sorting through what got made.

It's also the sign that closes out the first half of the zodiac. Libra comes next, where everything gets reflected back through relationship. Virgo is what prepares us for this portal, there's a real threshold here.

We're not in the eclipse portal anymore, we're in the aftermath of it, and eclipses don't stop working the moment the portal closes. What gets revealed in one keeps unfolding for roughly six months after. So a Virgo season landing right in an eclipse aftermath asks a sharper version of its usual question: of everything that just got revealed or sped up in me, what's mine to keep working with?

In the earth signs cycle, Taurus is the ground that plants grow out of, the mineral kingdom, rock and soil. Virgo is what that soil becomes capable of growing. The plant kingdom, always in process, always in service to something larger than itself. Every plant does a job inside a bigger system, and that specificity is the point. You are not here to do everything. You're here to do the thing that's yours, efficiently.

Virgo's Ecological Expression

Virgo runs from August 23rd to September 22nd, the last stretch of summer before the equinox. The heat starts loosening its grip. Days get shorter in a way you can feel. Out in the plant world, this is harvest prep, not harvest itself yet. Fruit finishing its ripening. Herbs getting cut and hung to dry. Gardens getting put in order before the season turns.

Virgo is the mutable earth sign, the second mutable sign after Gemini and the second earth sign after Taurus. Mutable signs sit at the end of a season and carry us into the next one. Gemini does that through multiplication, gathering information, scattering out into the world. Virgo does it through subtraction. Pruning what isn't needed. Where Gemini disperses, Virgo refines.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, same as Gemini, but where Gemini's Mercury lives in words and information moving through the air, Virgo's Mercury is earthbound. It shows up as craft, method, the actual doing of a thing well. Less talking about the work. More hands in it.

New Moon in Virgo: What to Do

This Virgo season carries its own new moon too, landing today, September 10th at 11:27pm ET, at 18 degrees Virgo. If you're reading this near that date, this is how to work with it. If you're reading this at some other new moon entirely, you can still follow this process of intention setting.

A new moon is one of the better times all month to plant an intention for something you want to call in. But don't do it right at the exact moment of the new moon. That window is the darkest point of the cycle, and it's better used for listening than deciding.

For the first twelve to twenty four hours after the new moon, just pay attention. Notice what pings, in your thoughts and in your body. A stray thought that keeps circling back. A small synchronicity that makes you raise an eyebrow. A tightness or an ease that shows up when a certain idea crosses your mind. What you've been thinking about this week, underneath the noise. That's the information the new moon is handing you, and it's a lot more accurate than anything you'd force into words in the first five minutes.

Once that window has passed, set your intention. It can be tied directly to whatever pinged during those hours, or it can just be whatever feels most true and useful to you right now. Both are valid. There's no wrong way to arrive at it. Keep it to one to three intentions. Any more than that and you're not setting intentions anymore, you're managing a project, and you'll spend the next month tracking progress instead of living with them until the next new moon rolls around and you get to set new ones.

Because this new moon falls in Virgo, it's a good one to bring Virgo's specific gifts to the intention itself. Discernment. Refinement. A daily practice you'll keep instead of one that sounds good on paper. Being of service, to yourself first, then to whoever else it reaches. Virgo is earth magic, precise and grounded, more interested in tending what you have than chasing something new and shiny.

If it feels right, give the intention a physical form. Write it down and burn it. Put it on your altar if you keep one. Pair it with something embodied, hands in soil, planting an actual seed while you hold the intention in mind. The form matters less than the fact that you made it a physical act instead of a thought that evaporates by lunch.

The Body of Virgo

Virgo being Mercury ruled can live almost entirely in the mental plane if you let it, turning every decision into a spreadsheet. So it's important to keep in mind that Virgo also governs the gut: the intestines, the digestive process, and the enteric nervous system, a network of more than 500 million neurons lining your gut wall, more than exist anywhere else in your body outside your skull.

That's not just a metaphor when people call the gut a second brain. The enteric nervous system can sense what's happening in your gut, process that information locally, and generate a response without ever sending the signal up to your actual brain first. It runs its own small, constant analysis, largely below where you can consciously reach it. That's where a gut feeling comes from: a functioning part of your nervous system doing work.

Digestion itself is also Virgo process. Something comes in, gets broken down, sorted, and either absorbed as useful or released as waste. Every single day Virgo's function, via our intestines, is: What's useful, keep. What isn't, let go. We can learn a lot from that.

Practices for This Season

Do one mundane thing with total attention. Pick something you do every day: dishes, tea, folding laundry. Do it once this week with your full attention on it and nothing else. Hands in the water. The particular smell of the tea as it steeps. Let it be exactly as unglamorous as it is. Virgo's spirituality doesn't live somewhere elevated. It lives in the actual task in front of you. You can reach divinity in just a moment.

Ask your gut before you ask your head. Next time you're stuck on a decision, small or large, skip the pro-and-con list for a minute. Put a hand on your belly. Notice what's there before you try to name it. Tightness, ease, a pulling toward or away. Let that register before the analysis starts running. You can still think it through after. Just let the gut go first once.

Find the Pisces in the details. Virgo and Pisces sit across the wheel from each other, and that's not the same as opposed. They hold a spectrum together, each one completing what the other is missing. Left alone, Virgo will happily disappear into perfecting a detail that stopped mattering three revisions ago. Next time you catch yourself deep in that kind of fixing, stop. Notice where the focus is sitting in your body, jaw, shoulders, the space between your eyebrows, and soften it on purpose. Then ask the Pisces question: what's the actual vision this is in service of? Let the answer pull you back out and up. If it still needs the detail work after that, go back and do it, guided instead of lost.

A Closing Thought

Back to the gut feeling.

Most of the time we override it before we even register it was there, then spend the next hour building a case for the thing we decided against listening to.

That override is the work this season. Try closing the gap between the sensation and the analysis, even once.

Discernment is the gift Virgo offers, every single time. Whatever else the sign gets called, that part is devotion.

(New here? These essays come out once a month at the intersection of astrology, somatics, and the strange, embodied experience of being human. Welcome.)

Libra Is Coming...

These essays move with the seasons, astrology as ecology. Next month the Sun moves into Libra, where everything Virgo just distilled gets put back into relationship, tested against another person instead of refined alone. More soon.

This intersection, somatic work, astrology, and ecology, is where I've done my own deepest work. It's also how I guide clients in session. If your body responded to anything in this email, a tightening, a softening, a quiet yes, that's the doorway.
