Leo Season: The Art of Being Seen
Beyond but HERE: The Leo Essay
On being seen, needing to be adored, and the eclipse in Leo
Somebody says something good about you. Watch what you do next.
A little discomfort. You hand it back to them, shrink it down, maybe make the self-deprecating joke that gets you the hell outta there. Three seconds, maybe less, and it's gone.
We are terrible at receiving.
This reflex is old. Most of us had it long before we had any language for it. Here's what I notice people like to do with it, myself included:
We reaaaaaaally like to home in on the idea that validation has to come from within, and I agree. We don't get very far until we can find our way to the source of our own compassion.
But watch how it gets used. Somebody offers us something good, we can't take it in, and now there's a respectable line for it. I shouldn't need or want outside validation. I'm supposed to source that internally. It sounds like growth. Sometimes it is growth. Sometimes it's the same old flinch in better clothes.
Sorry if I'm a broken record here, but we are created and defined through relationship. Your mother's gaze shaped your nervous system, and I don't mean that as a sweet way of saying you felt loved. I mean physiologically. Her gaze, her attention on you taught your body how to regulate itself (or not). That's how we're built. So, it's wild to me that we now have this weird flex against the basic need for good attention from others.
The trouble starts when "it has to come from me" turns into a rule. Another should. Another thing to fail at. Shame and blame rear their heads, and now we're nowhere near celebrating ourselves, we're just back to auditing.
I believe it's a both-and. We need it from ourselves, and we need it from the right people. Not from everyone.
All of this is Leo's territory. Being seen, witnessed as the particular thing you are, celebrated, your essence given attention. There are plenty of other facets to the sign, but this is the one I'm sitting with because I have a Leo moon, and for a long time I didn't like that about myself.
Leo gets the worst press in the zodiac. Narcissistic, dramatic, needy, hogging the mic. I did not want to deal with the part of me that needed to be adored by the people I love. I got so embarrassed about wanting it that I spent a long stretch insisting I didn't want romantic partnership at all.
Things got a lot easier when I stopped arguing with that need.
That took years, and it was the work itself, not the warm-up to the work. The need was running the whole time either way. It just ran underground and came out sideways. Not owning our wants and needs makes our lives very complicated. Once I let it be true out loud, it got proportionate. It went from shameful secret to ordinary information about how I'm built, so I knew how to support myself around it.
Which opened up the rest of the Leo archetype for me.
Being seen, witnessed, and honored is a skill and almost none of us were taught it. That's the assignment Leo carries. Attention is only the surface of it. The real work is learning to stand in our own light without flinching away from it and without setting the room on fire. Then Leo takes it a step further and asks us to be stewards of that, to help other people sustain their own shine. Igniting is Aries' job. Leo's is keeping the thing lit.
We can't teach anyone to receive while we're deflecting everything good that comes our way. We can't teach anyone to shine while we're treating our own wanting as a character flaw.
Things flow when we stop wrestling them. Or in this case, the fire gets tended.
Where Leo Begins
Leo is the fifth sign, and this is where the zodiac turns outward. Aries through Cancer completes one full round of the elements, fire, earth, air, water. At Leo the elements start over, and this time the work is expression rather than construction.
To summarize, Aries is the spark of life, pure ignition before it has a shape. Taurus grounds that spark into a body, into weight and form. Gemini disperses out into the air, gathers information, learns. Cancer turns all of that inward and learns a different kind of information: what it feels, and what the feeling says about who it is.
Those four build a self. Leo is where the self walks out the door.
Everything assembled in private now has the imperative to get expressed. How do I show this? How do I share it? How do I express the unique essence of who I am? How do I let myself shine in a world that doesn't support that well? A lot of experimenting happens here.
And that's not easy to do.
To be seen you have to risk not being received. Rejection. Humiliation. Being laughed at. Being too much. Many of our core wounds live in that list.
Which is why the sign got a lion and not something smaller. Leo is a brave sign, unfortunately this bravery gets read as vanity constantly in pop astrology.
The Leo loop, when it's running well, goes like this: You risk expressing something. Someone receives it. Your body notices that nothing bad happened. And your next expression comes out easier.
The loop doesn't make you need more praise. It makes you more you, more adept at being you. And it works the way everything else in here works, by repetition. One completed loop doesn't fix anything. But fifty of them change what you're willing to risk showing of yourself.
And the loop takes two. That's why the it-all-has-to-come-from-me rule fails. Please build lots of self-compassion, but there's also a piece of this that only arrives from being in relationship with the other. No amount of doing it correctly alone will produce it.
Leo's Ecological Expression
Leo is Fixed Fire, July 23 to August 22, planted in the exact middle of summer. Fixed signs don't transition. They hold the center of a season and emanate.
The fire element shows up three ways across the year. Aries sparks us off. Sagittarius is the heat that gets dispersed. But Leo is the flame itself. The part you see. The part you stare at, trans-fixed. The part giving light.
Right now the days are at their hottest and driest (at least here in this hemisphere). Flowers that already bloomed are pushing a second flush. Fruit is swelling on the branches. The animals that mated in spring are raising what they made. And none of that display is decoration. A flower is colored the way it is so something will come to it. Fruit is red so an animal will eat it and carry the seed somewhere else. Out there, being seen is necessary.
Fire is also the only element that needs to be in relationship. Water doesn't need anything to go on being water. A rock is a rock without your help. A flame is a reaction, it has to take in fuel and air every second it exists, and at the same time every one of those seconds it gives off light and heat. There is a beautiful reciprocity here. It's taking and giving at once. It's generous.
Leo is ruled by the Sun, which is the obvious target for every complaint people make about this sign. The Sun is the center. Everything revolves around it.
But the Sun isn't taking, it's making light. The Moon, Venus, Mars, all of them are shining with light the Sun gave them, and its gravity is the only reason any of them stay in orbit instead of drifting off into the dark. The Sun holds the center by giving, and everything else out there exists because it does.
That's the difference between demanding attention and holding it. Demanding takes something from the room. Holding it gives the room something.
What the Eclipse Is Doing
Ok, so eclipses aren't inherently a Leo thing, but they are happening in Leo season. So, here's some info so you can be present to the energy that shows up.
Right now, the eclipses are on the Leo and Aquarius axis through 2028. And this solar eclipse lands tomorrow at 20 degrees of Leo, peaking around 1:36pm Eastern. This eclipse is a New Moon with the volume turned up. Astrologers read them as turning points rather than tidy fresh starts. They reveal, redirect, or end things, and the intense window runs about two weeks. What happens here can reverberate for the next six months.
What makes this one worth sitting with: the Sun rules Leo, and in Leo season it's in its own sign, where it's strongest. So this eclipse covers the Sun. The sign whose whole job is to shine gets its ruler blocked.
So what do you do with that?
Expect the volume up. Eclipse weeks run hot. Things surface, people resurface, decisions that were sitting quietly start demanding an answer. It's not creating events but rather highlighting, in a major way, what was already there. I don't practice fear-based astrology, so I'm not going to tell you to put your whole life on pause.
Here's what I will say. An eclipse reveals, it doesn't require you to act. Let it show you something before you decide what to do about it. And watch for the Leo shadow version of that trap, which is the grand gesture. The dramatic move that will finally settle whether you matter. Fire wants to jump. That urge is real information about what you want, but not a great basis for a decision made this week.
And use your body as the instrument. Your system still knows a yes from a no. A yes comes with more room, more air, something opening. A no gets tight and small and held. When the story in your head gets loud, drop underneath it and sense which one is present.
The Body of Leo
Last month I wrote about the pericardium, the fluid sac your heart floats inside of. That's Cancer's territory. The container.
Leo is what's burning inside it. The heart, and the spine.
To be precise, Leo doesn't rule the bones of the spine. Capricorn has the bones. Leo rules the life force running through it, the spinal cord and the structure as a whole, the same way it rules the heart pushing vitality out to every part of you. Heart and cord together, that's your vital energy.
Your spine is not a column. It's a set of curves, and the curves are the whole design. They're what gives a spine spring, what lets it absorb a shock, what keeps the discs from grinding and leaves your organs somewhere to sit.
Let yourself feel the whole length of it. Tailbone at the bottom, the curve at the back of your head at the top. There's a reason somatic and trauma work spend so much time here. When you can sense your own length, you find that you contribute to your uprightness, that you're part of holding yourself, and that you're also held up. That creates a novel experience of yourself. Pay attention to that.
So when someone says something good about you and your chest drops and your shoulders roll in, that's worth noticing. Where does the collapse start, and how fast?
Practices for This Season
Fake it till you make it and take the d@mn compliment: Small, and harder than it sounds. Next time someone says something generous about you, don't deflect. Don't hand it back, don't downgrade it, don't explain the circumstances that made it possible.
Play with saying thank you, or whatever set of words feels right. Then stay quiet for three full seconds and sense what your body does with it. Heat in the face. An urge to leave the room. A tightening in the throat.
You're not being polite here, you're completing the loop. Somebody sent something out. Leo's job is to receive it and send light back. Experiment with what you want that to look like.
Be With the Covered Light of the Eclipse: Tomorrow, around 1:36pm Eastern. You don't need to be anywhere near the path of totality, and please don't look at the partial without proper glasses.
Wherever you are, stop for two minutes. Hand flat on the sternum. The eclipse is doing one thing: something is standing in front of the light, and what was underneath becomes visible.
So, what in you has been covered this year? Not what you've been hiding. What's been running hot the whole time, that the usual glare made hard to see.
Don't answer in words first. Sense where the question goes in your body and stay with it for the full two minutes.
Find the beat and follow it up your spine: Laying your hand flat on your breastbone, wait. Some days the beat arrives right away, some days it takes a minute. Once you have it, let yourself feel it in other parts of you.
Fingertips. The side of your neck. Behind the knee.
Then bring your attention back to the center of your chest and let it travel backward, to where the spine runs behind the heart, and up the whole length of it.
Heart and cord. Leo rules both, and this is what the sign means by vital energy. It's been running the entire time you've been reading this.
Sit With an Actual Fire: Leo's element likes to be met literally. A firepit, a woodstove, one candle on the kitchen table, whatever you can get.
Sit close enough to feel it on your face and give it a few minutes before you do anything else. People have been staring into fires for as long as there have been people. The staring does something on its own.
Then say one true thing out loud. To the fire if you're alone. To a person if you've got one.
If somebody is there with you, take turns, and don't fix each other. The listener's whole job is to receive it.
A Closing Thought
Back to those three seconds.
Somebody says something good. Most of the time that window of reception shuts before you've noticed it was there.
That window is the work this season. Try to keep adding more time to it.
Being seen is the risk Leo takes, every single time. Whatever else the sign gets called, that part is courage.
(New here? These essays come out once a month at the intersection of astrology, somatics, and the strange, embodied experience of being human. Welcome.)
Virgo Is Coming...
These essays move with the seasons, astrology as ecology. Next month the Sun moves into Virgo, where everything Leo just expressed gets refined into something useful, something in service. More soon.
This intersection, somatic work, astrology, and ecology, is where I've done my own deepest work. It's also how I guide clients in session. If your body responded to anything in this email, a tightening, a softening, a quiet yes, that's the doorway.
